Dans le Chicago dystopique de Beatrice Prior, la société est divisée en cinq factions, chacune dédiée à la culture d'une vertu particulière : Franchise (l'hôneteté), Abnégation (l'altruisme), Intrépide (la bravoure), Amitié (la paix) et Erudit (l'intelligence). Selon un jour désigné chaque année, tous les enfants de seize ans doivent choisir la faction à laquelleils vont se dévouer pour le reste de leur vie. Pour Beatrice, la décision est soit de rester avec sa famille, soit d'être celle qu'elle est ; elle ne peut pas avoir les deux. Alors elle fait un choix qui surprend tout le monde, y compris elle-même.
